Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal

The quickest way from Pacific to Atlantic (or vice versa) is to take the Panama Canal, a series of locks that first raise, then lower boats to the level of the 51-mile long canal. Construction on the canal began 100 years ago, in 1904; it was opened in 1914 and turned over from the U.S. administration to the government of Panama on Jan. 1, 2000.
