Last River Lost

The Sacrifice of the Stanislaus

Col TOM O'SHEI, the commanding officer of the Corps of Engineers, scoffed at Dubois' "stunt," and some doubted he was there at all. But a midnight press interview arranged by DON BRIGGS, a young photographer and budding filmmaker who ran FOR's press department, broke the story. From the Stockton Record to the Los Angeles Times to the CBS Nightly News, the stand-off commanded national attention.

Finally California Gov. JERRY BROWN, and then U.S. President JIMMY CARTER intervened, and the Stanislaus was given a reprieve. Mark and FOR won the battle. . . but they ultimately lost the war. Just three years later, in 1982, heavy winter rainfall gave the Corps the justification they needed to fill the reservoir, and by spring of 1983 the river had drowned.
